The earthquake that caused major destruction in the island nation of Haiti, and especially its hard-hit capital, Port-au-Prince, continues to result in millions of people suffering from sickness, starvation, and homelessness. Haiti’s already fragile infrastructure has been destroyed with major hospitals, bridges, homes and businesses left in ruin. Donations, however, to help the island nation rebuild are providing hope to the millions of displaced Haitians.

Pride Mobility Products Corporation has donated new wheelchairs and seat cushions to Gleaning For The World that are in the process of being shipped to the people of Haiti who are in need of supplies like this to make daily living easier. Pride Mobility is the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of mobility products including Jazzy Power Chairs, Pride Scooters, Pride Lift Chairs, and Pride Silver Star Lifts and Ramps. Quantum Rehab, a division of Pride Mobility, manufactures innovative, complex rehab solutions. The company is dedicated to providing expertly designed, engineered, and tested products incorporating technologically innovative, intelligent features enabling people with disabilities to achieve their mobility goals.

Wheelchairs have been one of the most requested items from our partners on the ground in Haiti due to injured legs from fallen buildings. This donation of wheelchairs has been part of 64 shipping containers of supplies that have arrived in Haiti or are in route as of today. With the help of corporations like Pride Mobility, we will begin the rebuilding process for Haiti and enable their people to return to normal living. We are extremely grateful for their generosity and willingness to serve.

“When we saw the devastation in Haiti, and the countless life-changing injuries that would require wheelchairs, we knew that we had to get involved with mobility solutions fast,” said Mark E. Smith, Pride Mobility’s Consumer Research Manager. “In the midst of this profound tragedy, it’s been our privilege to assist those in Haiti with the mobility products that we manufacturer and make a daily difference in lives.”

Gleaning founder Rev. Ron Davidson said that Gleaning is continuing to contact thousands of supporters and asking for emergency donations to meet the still urgent need. “Gleaning is working with several non profits to expand the medical care for the critically injured. Thousands have lost limbs to the falling buildings and do not have the funds to purchase wheel chairs, walkers, crutches and other devices to assist them in walking. A person without this equipment is destined to beg for a living for the rest of their life. With the donation of wheel chairs we can help a person support themselves literally changing their life and future.”

Within one hour of the earthquake, we were on the phone with our representatives in Haiti coordinating shipments of food and medical supplies,” said Davidson. “We are again counting on the generosity of our friends who have always responded when a disaster has struck.”

Gleaning is staying in constant communication with its partnering organization in Haiti to stay abreast of the people’s critical needs. That information will be updated on our Disaster Network and Gleaning website. Gifts can also be made on the website.

Where did the wheelchairs go for distribution? How many were donated?

Mary – thank you for the great question! There were a total of 89 wheelchairs that were donated to Gleaning For The World intended for Haiti relief. They have all been shipped to places in and around Port-au-Prince to assist earthquake victims with injures and disabilities.
