While preparing for future natural disasters, we continue to aid the people of Tennessee as they recover from the disastrous flooding of May, 2010. Over 56,000 homes have been damaged or completely destroyed. Gleaning is offering these people hope of recovery by providing furniture to help them rebuild their lives.

The NOAA predicts a very active hurricane season with 14 expected to develop and as many as 7 becoming major storms. Right now we are rapidly preparing for a severe hurricane season complicated by the oil spill in the Gulf. We are standing by with 25 tractor-trailer loads ready to ship where needed upon a moment’s notice. More than TWO MILLION bottles of water, plus blankets, food, and other critical supplies are ready to go. Because the storm season may cause unprecedented damage within the next 30-60 days, we must prepare another 25 loads.

When the phone rings, or the desperate e-mail comes, we are able to promptly send life-saving support in the time of disaster in the name of Christian love. That is our mission.

As you prayerfully consider how you can help, please remember that your partnership with Gleaning For The World saves lives. Our financial efficiency is nationally recognized and can be trusted.

Though the hurricane season is still looming for the Gulf and East Coasts, it has already devastated the people of Guatemala. Tropical Storm Agatha left over 100,000 people homeless. These people are now struggling to survive in makeshift shelters and plastic tents.

Our partnering organization, Hope of Life Ministries, is serving 50,000 meals daily in Guatemala, racing to meet the storm victims’ needs with medicine, food, clothes, and beds. The greatest daily fear is running out of food for the thousands in desperate need.

These starving families cannot wait another week for a shipment of food – they need our immediate financial support to purchase food now.

Gleaning For The World and Thomas Road Baptist Church have already sent $26,000 to purchase approximately 300,000 meals immediately for the starving children in Guatemala. We have committed to sending another shipment of 500,000 more meals.

This is not our first rescue effort into the impoverished Central America and the Caribbean – and even the U.S. In the first six months of this year, Gleaning For The World has already shipped 178 loads of food, clothing and medical supplies – twice the amount of product we shipped in the first six months of 2009.

These containers of life-sustaining supplies are a blessing to people in Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, the Ukraine, and even our own neighbors.

Over 400 troops from the Virginia National Guard are protecting our freedom in Iraq. This 4th of July, we can do more to thank our veterans. We can actually show our appreciation through Operation Enduring Support.

Families throughout Central Virginia need our support while their husbands, sons, brothers and mates are gone. Some of them cannot afford to pay for the necessary things they need.

Our troops should not have to worry about their family while they are fighting for us in overseas.

The 116th Brigade has opened a “store” where family members can come for support. They can pick up free supplies to help them through the deployment and as well as receive fellowships with others. We would like to help stock their “store”.

Thomas Road Baptist Church (TRBC) and Gleaning For The World are partnering together to honor these families. Please collect the supplies listed below. Then, drop off donations at Thomas Road Baptist Church or Gleaning For The World. TRBC will be collecting supplies on June 20th – July 4th.

If every church, business, school or other group would collect a few boxes of supplies, it will make a HUGE difference in the lives of these families. If you prefer, you can make a monetary donation, which will be passed to the families so they can purchase exactly what they need.

This project was initiated by the American Red Cross, the Virginia Defense Force and Gleaning For The World. Operation Enduring Support offers members in our local community a very special way to say thank you to the men and women who protect our freedom. For more information, contact Gleaning For The World at 434-993-3600.

The recent flooding in Tennessee has resulted in $1.5 billion worth of damage. 52 counties have been declared disaster areas. An untold number of homes have been destroyed. Residents are gutting out their water-damaged homes. Families were forced to find other means for shelter. They need immediate assistance.

Gleaning For The World has shipped 786,000 bottles of water to Nashville and Franklin, Tennessee. This will be distributed by our partnering organization, Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort. We are working on sending additional support.

You can help send supplies by donating non-perishable food, baby supplies, personal care products, paper products and cleaning supplies at at our Gleaning For The World location.

According to the Rev. Ronald Davidson, President and founder of Gleaning For The World, “We have been working with the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort since Hurricane Katrina hit the United States in 2005. They have proven to be the most effective partner in the U.S. to distribute supplies for those in need. We are glad to have this group partnering with us to help these families.”

We need your financial support to continue our efforts in providing relief to our neighbors. Will you help?
