Response To Easter Tornadoes 2020

Gleaning Responds to Easter 2020

Records show 105 tornadoes struck the US just over a week ago on April 12-13, spreading from Texas to Florida, reaching through the Carolinas, and moving into Tennessee and Maryland.

An F-4 tornado hit the rural area of Moss, Mississippi at 190 mph and has been tracked as the widest storm ever recorded in the state, spreading nearly 2 miles wide, and barreling through 91 miles before dissipating. This massive twister left 212 homes in Moss totally destroyed, and 249 with severe damage.

Mossville’s Fire Department Chief, Doyle Webb explained the extent of the destruction via telephone with our staff. He said, “within a mile of where I am standing, there are 100 homes that were completely destroyed, and all that the people could salvage was being carried in a 5-gallon bucket.”

Imagine… your entire household – destroyed, and all of your belongings can now fit into a 5 gallon bucket. My heart breaks for them!
We want to help as many people as we can, and we will start by sending our first truckload of disaster relief supplies to Moss, MS. Our plan is to continue sending supplies wherever the need is, for as long as resources are available.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and regulations, Gleaning’s collection will look different this time. We will not be asking for product donations from the public at our usual location on Ward’s Road in Lynchburg, VA.

Instead, we are seeking financial donations, only, and will use those donations to purchase critically-needed items such as nonperishable foods, healthy juices, personal care items, and cleaning supplies from local businesses. We also hope we can provide some paper products for the tornado victims, if possible. Normally, multiple pallets of paper products are included in our trucks of disaster relief aid.

If you are able to donate, please click here, or mail a donation check to GFTW, PO Box 645 Concord, VA 24538. We now have a Text-To-Give option, too. To give by text, simply text the word Tornado to 1-434-208-1878 and you’ll receive a text back containing the link to our secure donation form.

I cannot say “thank you” enough, but I’ll say it again. Thank you for your ongoing support of our ministry! If you are able to donate towards this relief effort, your generosity will be a blessing to those who are facing the most devastating time of their lives. They’ve been impacted by two disasters at the same time: Covid-19 and these devastating storms.

A Gift From Us To You

A Gift From Us To You

A Gift From Us To You

In the face of crisis, Gleaning For The World is there to help those who need it most. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve stuck to this mission by providing nearly 3 million masks, as well as various items of protective gear to areas in the U.S. and abroad.

In full transparency, this week we planned to unveil a new resource to our community: a free will-writing tool. Amidst recent events, we considered pulling the launch of this resource, which we were worried would be odd or uncomfortable to share during an international health crisis.

But after discussion and research, we decided that now more than ever, it’s important to protect what matters most and have a plan.

Write A FREE Will

FreeWill makes the process easier than ever with their online tool:
● It takes about 25 minutes to complete
● It’s legally valid in all 50 states
● It’s completely free — 100% of the time.

God has graced us with so many blessings in our lives — by writing a will, and creating an optional legacy gift, you can have peace of mind knowing that yours are protected, even in times of crisis or uncertainty.
Take advantage of this free resource and start writing your will today.

Year End Giving

Year End Giving

Make a difference with year-end giving!

“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.”

Wow – how true that is!

It’s true in my life.  And, as I watch those around me and those I interact with daily through the work of Gleaning For The World, it consistently rings true.

Do you agree?

I think it’s natural to think that happiness comes from receiving – especially as we compile a list of things we want for Christmas.  Yet, we all find it repeated over and over again that life-sustaining happiness comes when we give of ourselves to others.

As you know, we do a lot of giving at Gleaning!  We help those in extreme poverty…and those trying to recover from natural disasters and man-made disasters.

As we hand out bottles of water and blankets, medical supplies and meals, toothbrushes and teddy bears, we see a response of gratefulness and thanksgiving.  Those receiving the help are encouraged, empowered and equipped to get on their feet – to believe that current circumstances can change, will change and that the future looks brighter.

However, for those giving…those who provide the supplies…those who provide the funding…those who volunteer and pack and load and hand-out the supplies, I see a spirit of happiness.  For me, it is priceless to watch.

As you know, the end of the year brings the perfect opportunity to show support to the nonprofits you stand behind by giving a financial gift. Would you consider giving a tax deductible year-end gift to Gleaning today? Together, we can make a difference to those needing to feel God’s love during their most desperate moments.

Giving Produces Gratitude And Happiness

Giving Produces Gratitude And Happiness

Giving Produces Happiness & Gratitude

No one has ever become poor by giving.

–Anne Frank

Sometimes we are tempted to hold back and not be as generous as we might be capable of being.  Fear may cause our hesitation. Uncertainty of the future might cause us pause.

However, for those who are willing to step out in faith and trust God with their well-being, I have seen amazing life-change.  God gave to us and He has given us the choice to give to others.

Giving produces gratitude and happiness.  What a powerful tool we have in our hands!  It really doesn’t matter the amount, it is the level of sacrifice that produces the biggest return for each of us.  And, when we know that our sacrifice is valued, appreciated and treated with great care and respect, it is icing on the cake!

I want to wish you and your family a special Christmas season.  I want to thank you for your encouragement and support throughout 2019.  And, I want to ask you to make a tax deductible year-end gift to the work of Gleaning.  Together, we can make our world a little better place to live as we give a hand up to those who are suffering this month.

As you prepare to give this month to family, friends and to those who are less fortunate, I hope you will consider entrusting Gleaning For The World with a special gift. Your gift will be used by our team to share God’s love with those who are facing their greatest challenges. Together, we can make a difference!

California Wildfires

California Wildfires

California Wildfires

Our response to the Kincade Fire in Sonoma County, California was a great success! We were able to partner with the same organization we partnered with during last year’s fires. Through our partnership, we were able to distribute supplies to evacuees staying in shelters and to those who had permanently lost their homes and their belongings.

Our partners had a makeshift distribution center inside an unused warehouse. Families and individuals were able to visit the distribution center and receive supplies such as nonperishable foods, personal hygiene items, and new clothing items.

174 houses were burned in Healdsburg and Geyserville areas of Sonoma County. Over 77,000 acres were destroyed…. including many farms and vineyards (…meaning, many people have lost their jobs along with their homes…)

We were, however, pleased to hear about CalFire’s great strategies of evacuating Sonoma County residents, and we were especially happy to hear that no lives were lost due to this Kincade Fire.

The distribution center where our supplies were shipped was not only a place where people could visit and obtain the things they needed, but the volunteers there also delivered supplies to area shelters where people have been staying. Due to the widespread multiple fires in the area, some had to travel as far as 80 miles to find an emergency shelter that had room for them!

I just can’t imagine what that must have been like.

I want to thank each person who donated towards this effort. Your kindness is so very much appreciated. I hope you will join our team in celebrating the lifted evacuation and the joy many Sonoma County residents must feel in going home… and I hope you will join us in prayer for those who are now looking for their new beginning.
