According to reports, more than 170,000 acres have burned and over 1,600 structures have been destroyed, in and around Redding, California as a result of the Carr fire that has been growing since July 23rd. Also, in Logoda, California, the Mendocino Complex fire is now the largest wildfire in California’s history, with over 290,000 acres destroyed by the flames. Both fires are still continuing to grow.
With California’s ever-growing population combined with climate changes and rising temperatures, each new fire brings new challenges. At one point, there were over 8,000 firefighters from various areas battling these blazes. Thousands of residents are displaced; many, permanently.
Our team at Gleaning has been closely monitoring reports about this fire and we’ve been in communication with our partners in California to determine how we can help most effectively. Our immediate goal is to fill our first two tractor trailer loads of urgently needed supplies that can help so many who have been displaced and are living in temporary housing or shelters. In addition, we also want to provide the thousands of firefighters in harm’s way with food and water, to help keep them nourished and hydrated.
