Often the first step to helping someone on the streets get back on their feet is a caring hand with something to show them that there are people who care. We provide the homeless with food and blankets to help men, women and children (yes, children) come off the streets and into a program to get them back on their feet.
Gleaning For The World delivers tens of thousands of blankets to these individuals every year. These blankets provide warmth and comfort for those who are fighting for their very survival. Many on the streets face horrible situations every day, including freezing temperatures, violence, sexual assault and theft. These simple, low-cost blankets provide a comfort to those who have no hope.
Many of the homeless that we encounter are people who have fallen on hard times. Many are veterans, many are mentally ill and cannot afford medication. We can make a difference in these men, women and children’s lives long enough for them to get the help they need to pull themselves out of this painful situation.
It is a shocking thing to think about, but most families in the United States are one catastrophe away from homelessness.
This is Tracy. She is alone on the streets of Denver, and she lives in fear. Just few days before this picture was taken, a friend of hers (another homeless person) was shot only a few feet away from her. She was so thankful this warm blanket.
Charlie is a Marine veteran who served our nation in Vietnam from 1970-1971. He has been homeless a little less than a year can’t quite figure out why he ended up homeless. He now lives in a shelter. He is one of the many who received blankets from us yesterday.
This is John. He has been living on the street for almost twenty years. John is nearly deaf. He was so thankful to us for giving him a blanket. He recently had all he possessions stolen, a frequent situation faced by the homeless.
When his wife died last year, he spent his last dime to give her a funeral. Now, he lives on the streets because he cannot afford a place to live.
