Even though Hurricane Florence eventually downgraded to Tropical Storm Florence, North Carolina and South Carolina have seen 100 mph winds and experienced storm surge up to 10 feet high! This 400-mile wide storm caused over a million people to evacuate their homes, and there are still thousands waiting to return home to assess any damage to their properties. Today, several thousand are still staying in emergency shelters throughout the Carolinas as we wait for water levels to lower. Rivers are still rising; dams and levees are threatening to break; and trees, power lines, and high water levels are the cause of road closures throughout the area. Evacuations still remain in effect for many residents.
Gleaning For The World has been collecting disaster relief supplies from our local communities in Lynchburg, Forest, and Roanoke, Virginia. We’ve already sent hundreds of personal hygiene kits to Raleigh, North Carolina where there is a large emergency operation center. This center supplies emergency shelters across the states with critically needed items. We’ve also loaded and sent a truck load of supplies to our partners in Lumberton, NC, and another truck to Wilmington, NC. We’ve also sent three truck loads to Jacksonville, NC, which is one of the hardest his areas.
We often hear “thank you for what you are doing,” at our collection sites, however, we respond with “thank you, for what you’re doing.” We are able to send these emergency supplies because of wonderful people like you!
