WOMEN FOR JUST
In Rwanda, 18% of girls miss school because of their menstrual cycle. These absences add up. Over the course of a year, these girls miss between 36 and 60 days of school. This makes completing education much more difficult. This taboo applies to adult women as well. Women miss work and hide away during their cycle.
Women in rural Rwanda make roughly $.98 a day during peak farming season and often nothing when those jobs dry up. Disposable pads (tampons are a cultural taboo) cost more than $2 per box for a monthly supply. This is two full days of difficult manual labor just to pay for pads. Due to high level of alcoholism in the men population, women are often the sole bread winners. So, quite literally, the choice between food and shelter and pads has to be made. To cope, women cut strips of fabric and tie them into place.
